SWA4- Advertisements

1. I am analyzing two cigarette ads marketed to different demographics. One is from Ebony magazine in 2004 and one is from Cosmopolitan magazine in 2004.

2. Ebony is marketed to the African American population, while Cosmopolitan is marketed to women.

3a. Ebony ad- This ad has bright text, and shows a group of four people (possibly a family) playing billiards. All of them have large smiles, and one of them is smoking a cigarette. There is also a few pictures of varieties of the brand being marketed. In the bottom corner there is also a health warning that is much less noticeable at a quick glance.

3b. Cosmo ad- This ad is much more subdued, with less bright colors. There is a focus on blue, and the image is nothing but a woman in a flowing dress smoking a cigarette. Other than that, there is an image of cigarette packs, and the Camel logo. In the bottom corner, there is also a health warning, that is also not colorful and is not attention-grabbing.

4. I didn't have a particularly strong reason for choosing these ads, but I do think they contrast each other very strongly. One focuses on fellowship and fun, while the other focuses on being glamorous.
